Society is in Danger with Abuse?

Due to our economic slump, most of the nation’s attention is focused on law makers, Wall Street and job reports, which means that one of the hardest hit demographics is being overlooked, and that is our children. Across the nation there has been an increase in the number of children who are being abused because of domestic violence and school counselors tell us that they are seeing an increase in the number of mental health issues developing in their students.

Many experts now feel that there is a definite problem and the problem will get worse the more the economic condition worsens. In Colorado alone there were over 41,000 cases of abuse or child maltreatment in 2008, up from approximately 30,000 in 2007 and 20,000 in 2006, making it one of the worst years ever.

Although there is no justifiable proof that links the trend of children being abused to an economic slump, there is no denying that child abuse neglect numbers have historically risen during harsh economic times. Not only do the numbers go up but prevention becomes harder to enforce as well. Experts tell us this is likely due to the fact that more people are losing their jobs.

Unfortunately, these economic times have also been hard on the children, as school counselors have pointed out. Many teens are seriously concerned about the current economy and worry about their future. Recently, the Junior Achievement organization polled thousands of students in different states and found that 65% of the teens are concerned that the economy will have a negative impact on their financial futures once they have graduated from high school. There are other aspects that concern both children and adults, as 84% of the teens who were polled said that they were worried that the poor economy will negatively impact their family’s financial stability. Experts tell us that this instability is the trigger that often results in a drastic increase in the number of children being abused. No one likes to see children in headlines unless it is a feel good, heartwarming story, but of course the only time you hear about these kids is when it is too late and the effort to prevent the abuse has failed.
