Having 27 wives was a grand gesture on the part of Nigerian artist Fela Kuti, but when reality set in, he came to understand the meaning of “much too much”. Even when he later switched to a rotation of 12 wives at a time, the need for money was too great. Such large-scale polygamy is difficult for anybody to aspire to. It is also illegal within the U.S., as Brown of the TLC show “Sister Wives” has come to find. Kody, Meri, Janelle, Christine and Robyn are under investigation for bigamy by Utah authorities, reports CBS News Crimewatch.
‘Sister Wives’ freely promote their polygamist lifestyle
TLC wanted to make sure that the law wouldn’t crack down on their little “Sister Wives” show, so they consulted with the Utah Attorney General’s office. It was a reasonable inquiry. Scott Troxel of the AG’s office told TLC that while bigamy is technically a third-degree felony in Utah, it isn’t something that would draw a SWAT team. Police manpower and their need for money now makes examination an iffy process, unless child abuse or trafficking are involved. Radar Online speculates that “Sister Wives” is under investigation because it is a victim of its own fame.
Regardless of the damaging press, Kody Brown along with his 4 wives see no problem with bigamy.
“If we raise productive, contributing members of society who are moral and ethical, that’s our final goal, whatever their path is,” says wife Janelle, 40, who has borne six of Kody Brown’s 13 children under the current marriage arrangement. There are also three stepchildren within the family.

TLC started broadcasting “Sister Wives” on Monday, Sept. 27. According to People, episode one of the reality series focused on adding Robyn and her three children from a previous marriage to the roster of wives. Six more bigamy-packed shows are on the TLC docket, however police force might change that to a court docket.
Troxel stated in a statement that “Right now, it’s not in our hands, but we’re not closing the door”.
